Open up your Garden this SummerJuly 30, 2014
With the sun out long into the evening and the temperatures perfect for al fresco dining and generally enjoying the outdoors, it’s the right time of year to take advantage of your garden.
Although sprucing up your lawn and pulling up some weeds will help, the best way to do this is to open up your home to the outside, giving you ease of access to your garden through your conservatory, French windows, or patio doors.
Utilise your Conservatory
Summer is the time of year to enjoy your conservatory, or consider having one built. Large glass windows and roofs are ideal for filling your home with natural light, and opening up large bi-folding doors makes you feel like your garden is part of your home – not to mention giving you easy access back inside when those summer showers appear!
Don’t just use your conservatory as an (albeit bright) indoor space – try growing some plants that benefit from the heat, light and protection from the elements. Tomatoes, peppers, kitchen herbs and indoor houseplants will all add a touch of green to your conservatory, or maybe go for a bit of colour with vibrant African violets or summer roses.
With correct shading, conservatories can also provide a refuge from the heat of the midday sun – particularly if you have little ones around. An electric fan or two will help to keep the air moving without the need for costly air conditioning.
With evenings warm enough to sit outside, your patio is made for the summer months. Pay attention to your patio doors, ensuring they are fully operational and the glass cleaned, and don’t be afraid to smarten them up with a lick of paint. If replacing damaged doors, opt for double glazing to take advantage of the temperature-controlling properties, deflecting the sun’s rays in the hotter periods while retaining heat inside during the winter.
Similarly, assess the state of your patio furniture. Will a quick clean up suffice? Or is it time to invest in some comfortable sun loungers and a table for al fresco dining?
On the patio decking itself, a few potted plants and flowers will instantly give a bright and summery feel, making the outdoor space an enjoyable and relaxing one. For those balmy summer nights, hang a few fairy lights for when the sun goes down but you’re not quite ready to go inside yet.
